Panel Topic: BioConvergence: Confluence of IT and Life Sciences

"Biotech is at the stage where computing was when Bill Gates and Paul Allen started Microsoft"

- Nathan Myhrvold, founder, Intellectual Ventures.

Biotechnology is over twenty-five years old. Come discover why it is a very exciting industry today with a distinguished panel, and a wonderful audience. The panel will debate topics including:

  • Opportunities arising from the confluence of Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics with Computational Sciences and Chemical Engineering resulting in better medicines, safer foods and a cleaner environment.
  • Role of Intellectual Property protection and marketing to complement innovations in technology
  • Potential for exponential growth with the proliferation of new tools and platforms - Genomics, Proteomics, High-Throughput Discovery & Development
  • Is there a revenue model for personalized medicine? Or, should we simply expect to see one-size-fits-all billion dollar blockbuster drugs?

Our distinguished panelists include:

PicGlenn Cornett, M.D., Ph.D., currently runs Metastrat, a business providing deal negotiation/brokering and strategic advisory services to clients in venture capital, life science and complexity  science. Dr. Cornett also helps  early-stage companies formulate business plans and  acquire funding. Previous  roles have included: Vice President, Strategy (first in the US, then in  Europe) at Razorfish, an international Internet consultancy; several  positions at Eli Lilly, where he worked in strategy,  business development,  marketing and R&D; strategy consultant at McKinsey and Company; and policy  analyst and consultant at Los Alamos National  Laboratory. Dr. Cornett's  undergraduate degree in chemistry was awarded with  University Honors at  Brigham Young University. He holds an M.D. with  Distinction in Research from  the University of Michigan Medical School and a  Ph.D. in neuroscience from  UCLA.

PicAnthony Hunt, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Hunt serves as the Chairman of the Executive Committee, Medical Information Science Graduate Group, the Systemwide Biotechnology Research and Education Program, and the UC Biotechnology STAR Program. He is also the acting Director of the UCSF Biotechnology Training Grant. Dr. Hunt holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Florida.

Dr. Mlodozeniec has held senior management positions in advanced drug delivery technology at Merck, quality control at Roche, product development at Upjohn, and pharmaceutical automation at Syntex. Since 1990, he has been involved in technical service and quality management projects, which integrated pharmaceutical development with manufacturing operations and control. Dr. Mlodozeniec also served as Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Analysis while Director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology at the University of Kentucky. Prior to this, Dr. Mlodozeniec served as the president of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1984) and past president of AAPS. He was on the editorial board of five technical journals and was a Baldrige examiner in 1993 and 1994. He has written numerous publications and holds 14 U.S. patents. Dr. Mlodozeniec holds a B.S. cum laude in pharmacy from Fordham University (NYC) and a Ph.D. in Physical chemistry/Pharmaceutics from the University of Wisconsin. PharmQuest collaborates with the pharmaceutical & biotechnology industries  to provide software that significantly improves  efficiency and compliance in  the product development process.
