Victor
J. Menezes is Senior Vice Chairman of Citigroup and is a member of Citigroup’s
Management Committee and Business Heads Committee. He directs Citigroup’s Mergers & Acquisition activities and
is responsible for managing relationships with important customers and
government regulators. He is also
responsible for Citigroup’s senior management development programs and leading
the company’s recruiting efforts internationally.
Mr.
Menezes previously served as Chairman and CEO of Citibank and was head of
Citigroup’s Emerging Markets business.
He had responsibility for the corporate and consumer business and global
product responsibility for e-Business and Global Securities Services. Citigroup’s business in the emerging markets
is the preeminent financial services business with operations in 80 countries,
and in 2001 it had $13.5 billion in revenues, $3.2 billion in net income, $200
billion in assets and 90,000 employees.
Mr.
Menezes joined Citibank in 1972 and began his career in Asia. He was appointed Citibank’s CEO in India in
1978. In 1983 he was Citibank’s senior
officer in Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China. In 1985 he returned to New York to join
Citicorp’s Policy Committee and become Senior Corporate Officer for Latin
America and Africa. In 1989 he moved to
Brussels to head the consumer business in Europe and two years later his
responsibilities were expanded to include the consumer bank in the United
States. In 1995 he was named Chief
Financial Officer of Citicorp and Citibank, with responsibilities for finance,
capital and balance sheet management, mergers and acquisitions and shareholder
and reporting relationships. In October
1998 Citigroup, Inc. was formed by the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group,
Inc. Mr. Menezes then became President
of Citibank and co-CEO of the Global Corporate & Investment Bank,
responsible for Citigroup’s services to corporate customers and integrating the
activities of Salomon Smith Barney and Citibank’s Corporate Bank.
Mr.
Menezes was born in India on May 14, 1949.
He received his degree in electrical engineering from the Indian
Institute of Technology Bombay in 1970 and a Master of Science degree in
finance and economics from the Sloan School of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in 1972.
Mr.
Menezes is the Chairman of the Clearing House Association; serves as a trustee
of the Asia Society, the Eisenhower Fellowships and the American India Foundation.
He was recently named Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National
Center for Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
Mr. Menezes is also a member of the Advisory Board of INSEAD.
