IIT-IIM grads opt for domestic offers
Even though students across IIMs this year got good international offers, unlike last year, from firms in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, U.S and Australia, they have preferred to take domestic over international ones. Better career prospects in India, because of the booming economy, are the main reason. IIT Bombay alum Aditya, who got an offer from one of the leading I-banks where he would have been placed in NY, London, Hong Kong or Singapore, preferred to stay in India looking at a long-term career in India.

Yuppy by day, writer by night
IIT Bombay alumnus Animesh Verma has already witnessed his second book disappearing off the shelves, the economic recession — a key theme in the book — apparently striking a chord with readers. Verma’s first novel, Love, Life and Dream On, which he wrote while he was still at IIT, dealt with the 2005 Delhi bomb blasts and the anti-reservation protests that rocked the capital over the next three years. His second book, I Am Broke ... Love Me, follows a young Indian investment banker based in the US who loses his job in the recession.
Humble vegetable oil brings them electricity
The inhabitants 65 tribal families of remote Kolha village in Dhenkanal district never thought of experiencing the joy of electricity in their lifetime. But now with indigenously developed straight vegetable oil (SVO) technology, they would fulfil their long-standing desire. A prototype project, developed by Cummins India Limited (CIL) and IIT Mumbai through a collaborative research work, perhaps would lead the way for other remote areas where grassroots social service organisations can replicate the story.
Salary offers at IITs yet to pick up
Graduates expect a 10-15 per cent rise compared to last year ... while students at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are uncorking the bubbly with salary offers that have bettered last year’s figures, the scenario at many Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year is not all that chirpy. At IIT Bombay, things are at the brightest. Around 1,150 students are up for placements this year. Sources informed that the highest salary at the institute is Rs 40 lakh this year, nearly double of the highest salary secured last year.
