New symbol for Indian Rupee designed by IIT Bombay alum
The Indian rupee will soon have a unique symbol - a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R' — joining elite currencies like the US dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen in having a distinct identity. The new symbol, designed by Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, was approved by the cabinet reflecting the fact that the Indian currency, backed by an over-trillion dollar economy, was finally making its presence felt on the international scene.

After decades of leniency, IIT-B gets tough about attendance
The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has got serious about attendance. Its classrooms will soon be fitted with biometric systems, which will take thumbprint records to mark students' attendance. This will be a shift in culture for the Powai institute, which two decades ago did not even have compulsory attendance.

BANGALORE: Tathagat Tulsi, 22 years, Assistant Professor, IIT Bombay.Find it unbelievable? It would have been if it was not Tulsi. For a boy who finished high school (Class X) at the age of 9, this is just another feather on his cap. "I will join IIT Bombay on 19 July. Besides that, I have offers from Waterloo University, Canada, and IISER, Bhopal," he said. "But I chose IITBombay because of my desire to work at a wellestablished institute in India."Tulsi will teach students of his age or elder than him at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay.
Artisans get sales tips from IIT-B
Mumbai: Technology is not just about developing humanoids and sending rockets into space. At a recent workshop conducted by IIT Bombay's Industrial Design Centre (IDC), a motley bunch of 24 artisans from Assam learnt how to weave innovative ideas into their craft.
Innovations 2011 - Pune

IIT Bombay magnet for JEE top rankers again
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, continues to be the preferred destination for top ranking candidates of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2010. After the first round of course allotment, 68 of the top 99 rankers, considered to be the elite, have chosen IIT Bombay. Twenty-four of the ‘elite’ chose IIT Delhi, a marginal increase from 16 in 2009.

IITB alum's musical wins Tony
IIT Bombay alum Vijay Vashee ('74) and his wife Sita are Executive Producers of the musical "Memphis" which was selected as "best musical" at the Tony Awards 2010, beating out alternative fare like “American Idiot,” based on the music of rock band Green Day, and “Fela!” about Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. “Memphis” did get a boost in March when First Lady Michelle Obama took her daughters Sasha and Malia to a performance.

IITB's Green Campus Initiative
IIT Bombay's 550-acre Powai campus, nestled between hills and a lake, is one of the first educational institutions to attempt to create an environmentally sustainable campus on a large scale. Sustainability means relying on resources generated on campus. The institute is committed to becoming a model campus with regard to environmental conservation.

IIT-B enters space age with satellite tracker
IIT-B literally zoomed into the space age with the formal commissioning of a satellite-tracking ground station on the terrace of the aerospace engineering department. The primary role of the new space-age outfit will be to track IIT-B’s eight-kg micro satellite built by students.
IITians bag prize for social change
Avanti Fellows, a not-for-profit organisation founded by six IIT Bombay students and alumni, won first place at the Business Association of Stanford Entrepreneurial Students (BASES) Social Entrepreneurship Challenge last month.Having tied up with IIT-B, Akanksha Foundation and a IIT-JEE coaching institute, Avanti Fellows helps underprivileged students by providing free coaching for the IIT-JEE entrance test.
