Kakodkar panel on IITs looking at fee hike

A high-profile committee headed by Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and IIT Bombay Board of Governors, will meet next week for the first time to examine ways and means to allow IITs to expand their horizons, make academics attractive and boost research.

The committee was set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry late last year even as IITs — in the middle of the expansion programme that started under the last UPA — are faced with a huge faculty crunch that has been a cause for worry. The fact that all public institutions in India are staring at a similar predicament — the shortage of quality faculty and dwindling research outputs — explains why the recommendations of this committee, which would form “IIT roadmap to autonomy — financial, functional and managerial”, could be critical to the education scenario in India.
