IIT-B centre to focus on challenges of climate change

Climate studies will now be a major focus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, with the institute setting up a dedicated centre and initiating a new inter-disciplinary PhD programme in climate studies that will begin this month.

“The idea to start a centre on climate studies has been under discussion for a couple of years now. There are several departments within IIT-B with faculty working in different areas of climate change, energy and environment. We thought it would be a good idea to consolidate the expertise of all the departments and build a strong base of research in climate change and related aspects, which is an immediate need given the challenges we face,” said Prof Anand Patwardhan, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, IIT-B.

“Addressing climate change requires an end-to-end approach going from climate science and modelling to policy responses. Our research will focus on all critical issues which require urgent attention, local and regional,” he said.

Accordingly, eight departments/centres of IIT-B, including civil engineering, chemical engineering, energy science and engineering, environmental science & engineering, humanities & social science, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management and Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering have come together to offer the inter-disciplinary programme. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is supporting the project and will fund it for five years. The centre will also collaborate with other institutes across the country.
