IISc leads IITs in publications

A study has found that between 1999 and 2008, IISc produced nearly 13,000 research papers. IIT Kharagpur has produced 7,300 papers, followed closely by IIT Bombay (7,228), IIT Delhi (6,520), IIT Kanpur (6,234), IIT Madras (5,715), and IIT Roorkee (3,471). The National Institutes of Engineering (NITs) are sadly, nowhere in the picture as far a research is concerned.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) continues to top the list of elite engineering and technological institute in the country, leaving the IITs a distant second. IISc faculty and students have published 75 percent more research papers than the second ranked IIT Kharagpur.

A combined study by Gangan Prathap of the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources, and B M Gupta of the National Institute of Science and Technology, has found that between 1999 and 2008, IISc produced nearly 13,000 research papers. IIT Kharagpur has produced 7,300 papers, followed closely by IIT Bombay (7,228), IIT Delhi (6,520), IIT Kanpur (6,234), IIT Madras (5,715), and IIT Roorkee (3,471). The National Institutes of Engineering (NITs) are sadly, nowhere in the picture as far a research is concerned.

The study looks not only at published papers but also the number of citations received; a sure indicator of quality.
