CNBC-TV18 starts “Lessons in leadership” with IIT Mumbai

Travelling to the country’s best campuses, starting with IIT Mumbai, the event will be an occasion where business leaders will share views and experiences from their stellar business careers on a variety of subjects

All valuable lessons in business cannot be taught in a classroom. And the best way to learn is from those who’ve been there and done that. This philosophy underscores CNBC-TV18’s new youth initiative, “Lessons in Leadership” which shall provide India’s brightest young minds & its future business leaders, a unique opportunity to meet with the legends of India Inc.

The first event of the series saw R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons and Mr. Jerry Rao, Ex CEO – Mphasis, visiting the IIT Bombay Campus to interact with the students. The event was structured in an informal manner where these leaders had a free flowing discussion with the students.

Citing his view on leadership R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons said, “Leadership is completely self taught and not inborn. What schools and colleges teach are lessons on things that can be taught which will help one get a job, but what will help progress in the job are lessons that cannot be taught. IQ gets you a job and EQ keeps you progressing in your job.”

Jerry Rao, Executive Chairman, Value and Budget Housing Corporation, Ex CEO – Mphasis, added that, “There is nothing magical or genetic about leadership, it is clearly a learning skill. Leadership is very situational. A leader in one situation is not necessarily a leader in another situation.” He also added that “Leadership is something that followers confirm. Followers collectively create an aura and charisma for the leader.”
