The beautiful score for Doctor Zhivago that won an Oscar in 1965 will always be fresh and alive, thanks to Debasish Mahapatra’s ('97) efforts of digital remastering. He is the first and the only Indian to receive the CEDAR UK award in 2002 for this endeavour. But with the launch of the Limca Book of Records 2009, Mahapatra’s achievement has spread throughout the country.

LEGENDARY composer Maurice Jarre died recently in March. But his immortal Doctor Zhivago that had won Oscar for the beautiful score in 1965, will always be fresh and alive, thanks to Debasish Mahapatra’s ('MDes '97 IDC) efforts of digital remastering. Alas, not many in Mahapatra’s hometown know he is the first and the only Indian to receive the CEDAR UK award in 2002 for this endeavour. But with the launch of the Limca Book of Records 2009, Mahapatra’s achievement has spread throughout the country.
An electronics engineer, Mahapatra did his Master's in Product Design from IIT Mumbai when he got associated with the HMV SaReGaMa studio. Soon he started freelancing as a music consultant there selecting tracks for compilation of albums alongwith taking care of the cover design too. “Many of my hand-made portraits of music composers and singers were used for their cassette and CD jackets for the Golden Collection series. I also had the opportunity to paint the publicity poster for Amol Palekar’s Daayra,” he reminisces.
