A music concert by
Vidushi Smt. Vasundhara Komkali
accompanied by
Kalaapini Komkali – Vocal
Vishwanath Shirodkar – Tabla
Milind Kulkarni – Harmonium
Saturday, August 25, 2007, 6:30 p.m.
P.C. Saxena Auditorium (Lecture Theatre), I.I.T. Bombay
[The AGM of IITB-AA will precede the programme, followed by Tea & Refreshments]
Donor Passes (Rs. 50/- per person) available at Alumni Centre,
Gulmohar Building, I.I.T. Bombay. Tel.: 2576 7086.
Donor passes will also be available at the venue of the programme.
Vidushi Smt. Vasundhara Komkali is one of the leading vocalists of the country with
the rare qualities of immense virtuosity, innovative vision, and lyrical spirituality.
She was born in Calcutta and encouraged to learn music from her very childhood.
In 1946 she came to Mumbai and, for more than a decade, trained under Prof. Deodhar,
a doyen of the Gwalior Gharana and a disciple of Pt. Paluskar. Thereafter, she trained
under her husband, Pt. Kumar Gandharva.
Vasundharatai has been both a disciple and life-time companion of the legendary
Pt. Kumar Gandharva – accompanying the maestro, giving him sensitive and enriching
vocal support in his concerts throughout the country and abroad. She was not only
the silent force behind the success of Kumar Gandharva's musical career, but also
lent able support and contributed to the success of his concerts. She helped Kumarji
in the conception and execution of several theme concerts such as Geet-Varsha, Geet-Hemant,
Geet-Vasant, Rituraj-Mehfil, Triveni, Surdas and Tulsidas-Darshan, and Mala-Umajlela-Balgandharva.
Vasundharatai is a leading soloist in her own right and is a regular broadcaster
of AIR and Doordarshan. She has presented a unique theme concert called Aayee Badariya
which is based on clouds rather than rains! Malwa ki Lokdhune and Ritu ek Darshan,
a combination of Varsha-Hemant-Vasant compositions are some of her other presentations.
Perhaps, more than anybody else, Vasundharatai embodies in her music the incredible
range, the tremendous virtuosity, spiritual resonance and exploration of Pt. Kumar
Gandharva's great music. She is the true representative and heir to the Gayaki of
Pt. Kumar Gandharva.
In 2006, the President of India bestowed the Padma Shri award on Vasundharatai.
She has been honored with the Vasundhara Samman by Bharat Gyan Samaj, a century-old
music organisation founded by Pt.Bhaskarbua Bakhle. She is also a recipient of the
prestigious P.L. Deshpande Samman.

Venue: Lovegrove Pumping Station, Worli
Date: Sunday, 3rd June, 2007
Time: 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
A beautiful green area belies the fact that this is a sewage treatment
facility. Prof. H.S. Shankar (Chem. Engg., IITB) has designed and

not better than that of most rivers in India. The plant has been in
operation for nearly two years now.
SBT uses proprietary media, culture and additives for organic and
inorganic bio-conversion of oxidisable organics and inorganics.
Dissolved organics are removed by adsorption and bio-conversion while
suspended matter is removed by filtration and bio-conversion. Prof.
Shankar will explain the process and then guide us around the
facility.

Power full - Electric not viagric
These days everyone is in a lather worrying about power shortage, outage,
increasing tariffs - in short, feeling disempowered. It needs a linesman
from MSEB (IIT alumni to note) to show how to stretch the same insufficient supply,
viz 3 hrs/day, to 23 hrs/day under the "Akshay Prakash" yojana.
The flavor for this month's Alumni meet is power - the overall scenario right down to
energy saving techniques at the micro level (socket to us-0).
The domain experts are Mr. P. V. Krishna (IITB, '75)
and Mr. Girish Sant (IITB, '86) and Mr. B. B. Pawar (MSEB).
Girish, recently inducted into the working energy group of
the planning commission, will also be felicitated by the Mumbai Chapter,
in keeping with the fresh tradition of acknowledging laudable contribution to the community by IIT alumni.
-
Time: 5.30 PM, Sat 25th Nov '06
-
Venue: Ruia College AV Room at Gr. Floor, Matunga (C.Rly.)
-
Theme: *Less Power is more*
-
Menu: (3 phase)
It is hoped that 'open house' at the end will generate innovative ideas to optimize consumption of available energy in our daily life.
Needless to add, all citizens bothered about power are welcome.
(Teaser: Stay tuned for 2nd Dec event - Mega, er Magsaysay size.)
Cheers

Starry nights revisited - Saturday, 28 October
The stars are back in alumni favour and the star gazing expedition is
now rescheduled for Saturday, 28 October. For risk of casting creative
pearls before alumni, repeating earlier mail:
Want to watch
the nightlife of stars from a hillock near murbad? the real stars, not the bollywood
variety sign up jhatpat with spice and chillar for the tifr -conducted star gazing overnighter.
This is a regular program initiated by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for the public and covers
transport, grub, 24/1 chai, chairs and durries, built-up (and
open-air) loos, pesticide-free water and the air is conditioned to high comfort levels,
and oxygenated.
The bus leaves TIFR at 1:00 pm on Saturday, 28 October, reaches a resort at Shivalik Tekri in the evening
in time for tiffin. Post-dinner, professionals provide intelligence nightlong on stars and
other celestial bodies.
The bus returns at 7:00 am on Sunday, 29 October. A light jacket, binocs/telescope
and *pure* water might be optional for star-struck janta and the package costs Rs.350
(per head) payable at our rokda centers listed below.
Now here's the problem. There is a constraint of seats and registrants who miss the TIFR
bus might be accommodated by alternate transport @ Rs. 150 extra, totally Rs. 450 i.e.,
first come, first server pay 350 Rs. per head and second onwards 500, the difference payable on the bus.
In any case cut-off is 16 October for all to deposit n x 350 bucks, n=1 or more (needless to say,
iit alumni with fly. will get priority over their friends).
Strongly recommended as quasi-spiritual activity for pseudo-intellectuals. When was the
last time you noted Venus or Sirius or Orions belt? Not to mention a chance to shoot the bull
with aloo-mutter all night and participate in soulful Antakshari) for doubts / stupid question
mailto: mumbai@iitbombay.org or call 2576 7019 / 2624 5495
before 16 October.
Cheers
Ps: the other problem is that intoxicants are not permitted
