ABOUT US
The Mumbai chapter of IIT Bombay Alumni Association started MMM ( Mumbai Monthly Meetings ) movement in June 1996 and since then we have been regularly meeting in Mumbai every month, as a general practice, on the last Saturday of every month. The fixed venue pattern ( at the Institution of Engineers, Haji Ali ) has been discarded and we now meet at various locations, depending upon the topics, situation and speakers.
In the early part of this decade, the IITBAA Mumbai Chapter decided to make this a Pan IIT movement. We now have participants from other IITs as well.
Activities of the Mumbai Chapter are organised and managed by an Executive Committee which is headed by the President. Other office bearers are Secretary, Co-Secretary and Treasurer. Elections are held every year to fill in the vacancies.
Over the years, we have maintained the tradition of lectures / presentations by domain experts and eminent persons. Speakers have included Ram Jethmalani, Julio Ribeiro, Prof. Isaac, Rajesh Jain, N. Vittal, Sucheta Dalal, Jairam Ramesh, Bachi Karkaria, Dr Anil Kakodkar, Arun Bhatia, Medha Patkar, Harish Kapadia, Niranjan Hiranandani, Chandrasekhar Prabhu, Y P Singh, to name a few.
A diverse array of topics and issues have been addressed including the Union Budget, Preservation of Ecosystems, the Stock Markets, IT Industry, Energy Security, Mumbai City's Development, e-Governance, Civic Activism, Crime and Corruption, Right to Information, Pollution Control, Engineering Education, Mountaineering etc.
A two day workshop on Rain Water Harvesting attracted 500 + countrywide participants.
But it's not just lectures and speeches.
A wide range of outdoor activities were organised including tour of Reliance Infocomm Complex at DAKC, Navi Mumbai, Heritage Walk through the Naval Dockyard, weekend trip to the Karnala Bird Sanctuary near Panvel, Study Tour of Kashele and Belachiwadi near Karjat ( project work on check dams by CTARA, IIT Bombay ), Maharashtra Nature Park,Mahim etc.
Alumni from Mumbai and Pune regions enjoyed the Hurda party organised by the Pune Chapter at a farm in Talegaon.
An annual on-campus feature is the Varsha Stuti every August-- a Hindustani Classical Music recital by eminent musicians ( followed by Dinner ).
We have had drama too-- a play by IIT Bombay Students group, NOAC.
The core group of alumni who are regular participants have devoted a good deal of time and energy to bring to the forefront issues such as Right to Information, Good Governance, Water Management, Waste Management, Electoral Policies, Education etc.
Activities of the Mumbai Chapter have helped meet the objectives of the association including exchange of ideas, suggesting solutions to problems affecting citizens and in general enhancing the IIT Brand Image. Our alumni display a high level of bonding and its enthusiastic response encourages us to organise more meaningful and interesting programmes.
Bonhomie, fellowship, networking, interaction, all these form a welcome by-product and add flavour to our monthly meetings.
