It doesn't hit you till you leave the campus.

This thirst to hear a chant that drove your IIT Bombay team to victory – be it at the Inter-IIT sports or at cultural festivals nationwide. You graduate, launch yourself hard at your career, get married, have kids. And then it hits you as you find yourself sipping a chai on a cold winter morning. You can almost hear the echoes of long forgotten chants. And just as you begin to feel warmer, they fade away. You ache for just the past to come alive, just one more time!

Bay Area Diwali Dhamaka 2003

Like thunderstorms in a desert, the IIT Diwali Dhamaka was one such event. Slotted fifth in order of presentation, with a 35-strong contingent who had put in six weeks of hard practice, and coming on the heels of a good performance by IIT-Madras, IITB sailed into a smooth rendition of "Bay to Bombay". Ten non-IIT judges with clear criteria for points voted IITB as the undisputed winner.

Oh! IITBian! You should have been there! 1000 souls willing IIT-Bombay to make that killer blow – waiting and applauding each dance, each line of each skit as it rolled along. Delivered by a team spanning graduates from the 80s to the 01s, with spouses and alum-kids chipping in, this event defined team-work that has been our hallmark.

Launched on an uplifting score from Top Gun, “Bay to Bombay” narrated the life and times of Veeru, an IBCD (IIT-Baap, Confused Desi). Outsourced by his dad to IITB, a grudging Veeru discovers himself – and his lady love – while on campus. Read the article by Sanandan Swaminathan to share Veeru’s journey. If you are in a mood to lounge around, view the twenty-minute recording.

There are some that argue that PAFs are a distraction from academics. And then there are those who deliver a signature performance in spite of their taxing jobs, family commitments and commutes to meet for each practice. To the entire team that delivered the trophy, your efforts have lit up a new possibility – a new wave of social events that have their strong roots in our years on campus. From all of us who were lost in the chants at Foothill College auditorium, thanks for helping us create new memories that easily rival older ones.

To our competitors with their eyes set on winning next year - Do not underestimate the heart of a champion. We love the competition, so bring on your best.

To our alums wanting to help us take this game to the next level – Forget your years of pining for that magical feeling. Join us and be a part of our next victory.

It doesn’t hit you till you leave the campus – a realization that you now belong to a bigger family of IITB-alums fiercely proud of your contributions.

Here’s to setting a higher bar and winning the next one. IIT Bombay style.
