IIT Bombay will be celebrating the completion of 50 years of its eventful existence. The Golden Jubilee celebrations will continue till 10th March 2009, the 50th foundation day. For the first time ever in IIT Bombay, students have joined hands with the institute to reach out to alumni across the globe. A team of around 35 student volunteers has come forward to contact alumni and help out in the task of fund raising. Thus has been launched SARC (Student Alumni Relations Cell). And the first event organized by SARC is a Phonathon which will be held in December 2007.

The Phonathon is a telephone marathon in which a team of about 30 student volunteers will be calling alumni. Our primary goals are to build alumni relationships and to update alumni information in the Alumni Directory. So don’t be shocked to get a call from one of us in December.

We don’t think we will bore you much as the common string of being an IIT Bombay student should give us enough topics to talk on. You can ask us about your specific hostels or departments or about what’s going on in the institute. In fact it would give us all a chance to compare what college life was for you and what it is for us - common mischief, common professors and maybe the common lingo.

It's the first time we students are attempting to do something of this kind and scale and we hope to get some encouragement from you.

Ridiculous reasoning to get tests postponed..

Absolutely absurd excuses for coming late to class..

Flippantly forgetting about quizzes..

Reckless rush for last minute submissions..

Constant cribbing about mess food..

Leisurely loitering at lakeside..

Walking around getting drenched in rains..

Cursing the unfair sex ratio..

Teasing everyone and anyone nonchalantly..

The first crush..the first date..

The first cigarette..the first drink..

Complaining about everything the institute had or did..

But loving it even more every moment ..

There are countless intangible things that we take away with us from IIT Bombay apart from the graduation/post graduation degree. What we are, when we enter, and what we become, as we leave this institute, are two completely different personalities. And definitely, the change is for the better. Lord only knows the reason for the change, for such an amazing grooming—whether it’s the campus, the academics or the impressive seniors who always show us how much more we can improve.

Whoever be the magician, the institute has cast a spell on each and every person who has stayed in it. A spell which keeps calling us back to it, forcing us to miss it daily. For our mission, we are hoping to remind everyone of the magical times(if they need any reminding!) so that people will shell out some money to give something back to the institute.

A place which has given us so many firsts - right from probably the first sip of whiskey to the first job, deserves to be in our list of first priorities especially when it is celebrating its 50th birthday. Come, contribute, and join the celebrations!
