Dear Fellow Alumni,

One of my friends and batchmates from IIT Bombay is sick with leukemia - see details below, or visit http://www.wam.umd.edu/~rgrover. He is going to come here with his parents for treatment and needs a place to stay. We're trying to find a place near NIH in Bethesda. I stay in Hyattsville and they'll be staying with me as long as need be, but we'd prefer some place in Rockville/ Bethesda so they have easy access to NIH.

If you're willing to contribute towards rent of an apartment in the Bethesda area (for 4 people, we require a 2 bedroom apartment with rent and living expenses around $2000/month for a maximum of 6 months) please let me know. You can send a check for any amount to my address (see below.) Please make checks payable to 'ARMAN FAZLI TREATMENT FUND.' Any extra amount will be donated on your behalf to IIT Bombay Heritage Fund or to a charity of your choice.

If any of you can help with a room for 2-3 months or more, we'd really appreciate it. I will personally help with all the transportation etc., so you won't have to worry about anything on a regular basis. If any of you know people at NIH/Bethesda/Rockville who would be willing to offer them a place to stay, or if you're willing to let them stay with you, please do get in touch with me or Anand Inani (anand[!]pdf.com). Even a month at a time would be good because the next month someone else may have accomodation available.

Please forward this email to all those whom you think will be able to help or would know persons able to help.

Arman Fazli and his parents and his brother arrive between 22 and 26 September.

Regards,
Rohit Grover (rgrover[!]lps.umd.edu

Anyway, I write to you seeking some help. As you may have heard, Arman Fazli, our dearest of batchmates and wingmate, has been diagnosed with blood cancer for a little more than a year. Right now he is at a very critical stage and has to be brought over to the US for bone marrow transplant. Under ordinary circumstances, this treatment would cost a bundle, but with god's grace, NIH at JHU has offered to help with free treatment. His family is bringing him over this week. To this end, they will surely need a lot of help, especially in the beginning, just like (and in fact more than) we did when we were new here. DOSA and Velu have been digging around for info and help with acco and other
things in and around Bethesda, but surely, it will be a great help, if they get some time and support from us in the initial process of setting up things here. I was talking to Sreek last night and he mentioned that UMCP is quite close to Bethesda and we thought of contacting you. I was wondering if you or the Indian Students Association at UMCP or JHU would have time to help them. Please let me know if this is possible, and I will call you to talk in more detail.

Thanks in advance,
Anand

Hi All,

I had a talk with arman and his family last night. As you all must be knowing that Arman was diagnosed with cancer last year. He underwent a chemotherapy round last year and his cancer had subsided. But a few months back he had a relapse. He went for another round of chemotherapy in Bombay, after which they were planning for a bone marrow transplant in the US. So he is now coming to US for his bone marrow transplant.

Fortunately a US Organization i.e. National Institute of Health has agreed to treat arman for free, provided they do some tests on arman and then they are interested in his further treatment. So they would have an appointment with Arman on the 29th of this month at Bethesda, MD. After that
appointment they would then decide if they want to go ahead with the treatment. Alopathy doctors in India have already said that they cant do anything more. This is the last chance for Arman to be treated by conventional medicine. Hope everything goes fine.

Arman and his family would be coming here around 22 - 26 th of September, that is this month. THey have been through very tough times in the last year and have seen their financial reserves diminish in the expensive treatment they have already undergone. So the whole gist of this is to ask for help, in whatever way we can.

Every medical treatment for arman is covered. But there are still some major expenses left that would need to be borne by Armans family. These include Travel to and fro from India, accomodation in the US, travel in US and living expenses in US.

It is expected that they would stay here for around 2-6 months. And the expenses seem to be around 2000 dollars per month. If we can have this amount between us then it would be great. I think that they are fine buying their own air tickets as per my last nights talk.

The first and foremost thing that needs to be done is to find a good acco in or near Bethesda, Maryland. Any help in this direction would be of most help. This would be more difficult since the duration of stay is small and not fixed.

Please let me know either at sharma_girish[!]hotmail.com or at h9iitb97[!]egroups.com in what way we can help. You can also call me at 510-475-1873 after 7:00 p.m. pacific time.

Looking forward to your reply,
DOSA
