In brainstorming over how to increase the interactions among students and the alumni, one idea that consistently topped the list was that of sponsoring your own room. To quickly get to the gist of it, here are some of the roomy reasons for including it in this year's fund drive:

  • Increase the interaction between alumni and students, has to be the first one!
    • mentoring (do/don't do MBA, what is hot? what does it mean to be successful in life?)
    • life lessons (everything except match making as they are only made in heaven :-)
    • build an excitement in a place where we spent 4 years, undoubtedly among the best in life!
    • just be there for a stressed out student to give a perspective on life, to lighten the moment
  • Help IIT defray some of the maintenance costs
    • empowering students to design their room and wing and creating an excitement while doing it
    • jungle room, nature theme, sports theme, music theme, painting your role model or any model
    • all hostels look more colorful, could perhaps lead to intra or inter room competition
    • gives alumni their very own room with a view to visit their hostel
  • Creates more opportunities for alumni to donate
    • for alumni, it is a rare satisfaction to be able to give back to a worthy cause, what could be more than their room?
    • suggested donation: a 4-year pledge of Rs. 40000/year or $1000/year per room OR lumpsum donation of Rs. 1.6 lakhs or $4000; again no amount is small, it costs money to change even a light bulb even though it still takes only one engineer to do it:)
    • do this on a 4-year cycle by passing the baton to the next 4 year batch
    • additionally, provide Linux laptops per room with HiFi connection with preloaded software/labs/teaching aids etc.

The core team has discussed this scheme several times during the conference calls and offline and even though all the details are not flushed out, we decided to include it in this year's fund drive. It is a test concept and response from both sides, alumni and students, will decide its future. We are confident that several alumni would like to convert their bond to their room and the hostel for its upkeep and look forward to an opportunity to interact with its current occupant.
