of Management is inaugurated

Mr Mukesh Ambani, Vice Chairman and Managing
Director, of Reliance Industries gave the inaugural address while inaugurating the new
School of Management Building at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on September
14, 1999. Mr Ambani said that it is noteworthy that an institution like IIT Bombay
is initiating this synthesis between technology and management. It is a management
programme designed with an IIT background. Mr Ambani also said that it is very
important for a country like India to master the art of synthesis. Nearly 10 per cent of
India's GDP is contributed by what Mr Ambani refers to as "new economy"
companies. He said that over the next 10 years, this share is expected to go up to
21 per cent while the global GDP is expected rise to $37 Trillion.
Prof. M.G.K.Menon, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT
Bombay and representatives from ICICI, Hindustan Lever Ltd. were also present on the
occasion. The ground plus 3 storeyed building also houses IITs Industrial Research and
Consulting Centre. A Lecture Hall complex is also integrated into the building as a common
facility for the Institute. A special feature of the building is a magnificent atrium at
the entrance, which is 60 feet high and is covered with Polycarborate Pyramidal roof
units.
The School of Management
(SoM) at IIT Bombay was set up in 1994, with the dual mission of training professionals to
assess, select and manage technology by capturing the synergy between engineering,
sciences and management disciplines, and playing a vital role in those areas of industry,
government, and public activity where technology is a key strategic component. From its
inception, SoM has been building links with financial institutions, corporations, apex
bodies representing wide industry interests, and many international institutions.
In congruence with its mission, the School's activities include a
welldefined mix of educational,training, research,consultancy and proficiency enhancement
activities. These include:
- Post Graduate programme in Management leading to the award of
Master of Management (MoM) Degree
- Post Graduate programme in Management for working
professionals, leading to the award of Master of Management (MoM) Degree
