An Appeal for IITB

In this our Silver Jubilee Year, we are the special group of Alumni at the IITB. It is with much satisfaction that most of us look back and remember these past years of our professional life. It is now time to go back in time to the beginning of this period and think of the alma mater that made it all happen.

Presently, we have a dynamic director who had taught many of us, and all of us hold in high esteem. He has a vision to make the IITB an institution of world class order, and second to none in this region. We, the alumni should try and help him in every way possible. He has indicated the institute requires funds for additional accommodation for the students. Presently, the strength of the students has increased almost 150% but the hostel rooms have not increased proportionately. As a consequence, most of the first year students, and some second year students, have to share rooms! It is incredible to most of us to imagine sharing of rooms. It is in this context, that Prof. Sukhatme suggested to the alumni to raise funds for hostel accommodation. We, the alumni, have a special bond with the hostels. All of us occupied the hostels during those formative years and we are the ones who can contribute without looking for any mileage.

The institute has plans for a new hostel, besides additional rooms and facilities in the existing hostels. These are presently being provided at a trickle due to poor funds availability. Hence this appeal for a contribution to help restore the standard in basic facilities on the campus. It is estimated that each hostel for 400 students, will cost about Rs.25,000,000 complete with facilities.

Considering the potential income generated by our batch since leaving IIT, even if a small fraction is put into a kitty, it will swell to help build a hostel. To avoid going into statistics and laboured calculations, let us think in terms of how much we could raise with no second thoughts. One day's income for each year since graduation, seems a small enough contribution. To think that this small contribution since we started raking in the moolah would help build an entire hostel! 25 days or one month's income is all that it really needs to make a small beginning to help get our IITB into the premier position that we always thought it deserved. We therefore appeal for a minimum contribution of a month's income at the earliest. Also appeal to your establishment to contribute to IITB. Remember all contributions are tax exempt.

Attached are two formats for covering letters for you to attach with a contribution. The first is for the use of the Alumni based in India, and the second for those based in the Americas. Others have a choice of sending to either. Contributions to IIT, & IITB Heritage Fund are tax exempt.

Thanking you and confident that we shall not fail in our generosity to our alma mater,

With warm regards,
Core Committee for Class of 74 Alumni Oct-99

Dear 74 Alumni,

We had a meeting on the 10th, Sunday, at IITB Guest House with lunch. The following alumni were present, Velji Gogri (Chem/H6), Hariharan (Mech/H2), S.J.Bhagwat (Elec/H3), D.S.Karande(Elec/H2), R.R.Shirwaikar (Aero/H4), A.S.Kalbag (Mech/H2), Ajit Pimpalkhare (Met/H3), Ashwin Bondal (Mech/H2), Ashank Desai (Mtech Mech/H1), & Bakul Shah (Elec/H3). Besides talking about IIT days, we discussed the Alumni Day programme, and who's taking charge of what!

After the visit to the IITB Campus on the 20th, we met again on the 29th September, to plan further about our A-Day, 26th December, 1999. Those who have not visited the campus will not be able to appreciate the unknown force that is attracting us back to our alma mater. We sincerely wish that you come down on Alumni Day and relive those glorious days 25 years ago - though only for a short while.

As you enter the campus through the Main Gate, one now appreciates the trees covering the main avenue and the lush green everywhere which is so soothing (remember the rains are just about over). These days the gates remain closed, and the security will come and open it as you approach. You are supposed to make an entry in the visitor's register (subtle reminder, you are no longer a resident here!) and then proceed. But who can prevent one who has spent five years here to not try and beat the system? So, you drive down to the gate (not trudge as in the past), honk, and drive past as if you have been doing it these thirty long years. Believe me, 8 out of 10 times you can just sail through. Once you just slow down to say, "Guest House" and you are allowed to proceed, on another occasion you have to park, get down, walk down and make the entry and then proceed. No doubt you show your displeasure and give some funda to the security about why all this now …. Etc. (You know the poor chap's doing his duty - unfortunately too well) But then who can resist the temptation to try out what you were never taught but incidently picked up on this campus.

We've been meeting at the Guest House, which was just starting in our time. It’s a lovely place overlooking the lake and garden. The view is excellent and these days you see more of the water-haycinth and less of water (or vice-versa, depending on the breeze direction, we were told). The rooms are comfortable and inviting to all the alumni, particularly the Silver Jubilee Batch. The food is not what it was like in those days (or am I getting old and nostalgic?), its good!

This meeting we had two special guests, Sudhir Badami (MMM fame) and Nishant Mani - Gymkhana Cultural Secretary (#220/H4). Sudhir was there to tell us his experiences in organising their batch function and his enthusiasm to get the ex-IITian going is boundless. He has made some suggestions, which we appreciated, and shall hopefully succeed in implementing. Nishant has agreed to get some programmes organised for the rest of the family (we've been told in all the alumni meets the IITian just forgets he has a family in tow and they have to fend for themselves, hence we are trying to be a little thoughtful).

The highlight will be an address by Jayant Narlikar (if we can persuade him to come). We are also considering sending invitations to retired faculty who had taught us and we can contact. We invite your ideas for any thing that you can think of and help us to get organised.

Some mementos and other giveaways are also being worked out. To fund all this we are having a subscription for all those who are attending the Alumni Day. Each Alumni is expected to contribute Rs.2000 (for self and family - all inclusive for the day). The function will start with registration at 9 am and end in the evening with dinner. A detailed programme shall be given shortly.

This is what you need to do:

  • Click on the 'Reply' button and acknowledge you have received this message and indicate how many will attend the Alumni Day function on 26th December, 1999 (self, spouse, kids).

  • Forward this message to any of the batch that you know of and does not feature on the list above, with cc to undersigned.

  • Get your cheque books out and make your contribution to "Registrar, IIT Bombay (Class of 74)" and mail it to Dean, Resource Development, IIT Bombay, Powai, MUMBAI 400 076, or to IIT Bombay Heritage Fund. Both are tax exempt funds and the reciepts will be mailed to donor directly.

  • Please persuade your establishment to make a contribution towards this cause and send it in with a covering letter to indicate the donation details.

  • Last but not the least, book your passage and accommodation for the Alumni Day on 26th December, 1999. You will be assured of a memorable day that you shall cherish for the next 25 years at least.

We shall keep you posted on the latest developments regularly. Since Alumni Day is fast approaching, please rush your registrations, bookings and contributions. Other details and formats for the covering letter and tax exemption details are given in the attachments.

Bye for now,
