Competition: Solution for Powai Lake
I.I.T Bombay invites its students to participate in a contest for the best solution to the problem of Powai Lake. The lake on which our campus is situated has been in a state of degradation and the contest is aimed at eliciting bright ideas which, if implemented, hold the best promise of restoring it to its pristine glory with a clean body of water providing a sanctuary for aquatic life and a heaven for migratory birds. The winning entries will be awarded the following prices.
1st Prize : Rs. 10,000.00
2nd Prize : Rs. 5,000.00
3rd Prize : Rs. 3,000.00
Five consolation prizes each : Rs.1,000.00
The problem facing the lake are as follows.
The lake : Situated in Powai, a north eastern suburb of Mumbai at an altitude of 150 ft., the Powai Lake is an artificial lake dating back to 1891. It spreads over an area of 2.23 sq. km., which could hold 5455 million litres of water.
The Problem: The basic problem is one of pollutants and silting. Pollutants enter the lake from a number of point sources (five wastewater drains and 21 storm sewers) as well as through various non-point sources. Quarrying activities in the surrounding hills and the construction activities have led to a very high degree of silting, resulting in a significant reduction in the water volume. Water quality in the lake has deteriorated due to addition of organic matter and nutrients with the result that a large part of the lake is covered by floating and rooted plants.
The contestants will be required to suggest remedial measures with the aim of restoring the pristine nature of the lake and its environmental quality. For further details please contact the Head CESE.
The contest is open from 20th September to 19th October 2001. The participant may send their entries to the Head, CESE.
