SOM AMONGST BEST MBA SCHOOLS IN ASIA PACIFIC
The SJM School of Management has been rated
amongst the 25 best MBA schools in Asia Pacific Region by Asia
Inc. Magazine, published from Hongkong. The rating was based
on the points earned by the various Institutes on the following
seven key criteria:
Quality of courses, Quality of graduates, Quality of student
intake, Quality of faculty, Quality of executive education
programs, Quality of outreach to the business community, and
Quality of faculty consultants.
The SJM SoM was rated 25th with a total of 215 points.
The National University of Singapore was rated 1st with
a total of 1058 points. The other Indian B-Schools which acquired
a position in the top 25 include: IIMA rated as 6th,
IIMB rated as 11th and IIMC acquitred the 16th
position.

SOM BAGS AWARD AT PRERANA 2000
The SJM School of Management won the Best
Summer Project Award in the prestigious Prerana 2000 contest, the
first and the biggest International Contest for B-School Summer
Projects, conducted at NITIE, Mumbai during 13th and 14th
October, 2000. The other awards won by the School were:
Global Best Overall Summer Project Award, won by Gunjan Jain
and
Runner's Up Award in Marketing Module, won by Arvind Shukla.
In this contest, 76 Business Schools from all over the world had
participated including the prominent ones from India i.e., IIMA,
B,C,L; XLRI, FMS.
Amongst the foreign Business Schools the following had
participated: London Business School, UK; London School of
Economics, UK; Sheffield Business School, UK; Southampton
University, UK; MIT Sloan School of Management, USA; Purdue
University, USA; Asian Institute of Management, Manila; University
of Melbourne, Australia.

BEST PAPER AWARD
The paper entitled "Ultrasensitivity in
Enzyme Cascade system" authored by Aditya Pratap Singh and Prof.
K. V. Venkatesh, Department of Chemical Engineering, received
the best paper award at the International Conference on 'Modelling
of Biochemical Systems and Metabolic Engineering' held at
Tenerife, Spain, during 25th-29th September
2000.

IIT SEWAGE CONNECTED TO THE BMC SEWER LINE
The work of laying the rising main from Hostel
8 sump to the BMC balancing chamber on Adi Shankaracharya Marg
near Y point gate was completed followed by a installation of
higher capacity pumps at the Hostel 8 sump. With the commissioning
of the system on the 22nd of September, the entire sewage of the
IITB campus is being discharged to the BMC trunk sewer line and no
sewage is going to the Institute's sewage treatment plant.

Dr. Masahide Kurimoto, Vice President of Nagoya
University of Commerce and Business Administration, Japan visited
IITB on the 3rd October and had a meeting with the Dy. Director,
Dean Academic, HoD KReSIT, HoD SJM SOM and Registrar. Thereafter
he visited the KReSIT and SJM SOM and met the respective faculty.

FACULTY NEWS
Prof. Venkatesh, Assistant Professor,
Department of Chemical Engineering presented two papers at the
International Conference on Biochemical Systems Theory and
Metabolic Engineering at Tenerife Spain held during 25-29th
September 2000:
Paper entitled "Ultrasensitivity in MAPKinase cascade
system" which was authored by Aditya Pratap Singh and K. V.
Venkatesh. Another paper entitled "Gal4p mediated expression
of GAL/MEL regulon: effects of Glucose and Galactose"
authored by Prof. P. J. Bhat and K. V. Venkatesh was also
presented.
Dr. J. Adinarayana, Research Scientist, Centre of Studies
in Resources Engineering was invited by the Vice-Chancellor of the
Gujarat Agricultural University to attend a Workshop on
'Information Technology in Agriculture' held on the 30th
of September 2000. He also delivered the keynote lecture on
"Spatial decision support system for rural land use
planning".
Prof. Madhav Kulkarni, Department of Civil Engineering was
invited to deliver lectures on
"The Global Positioning System" at the National IT
Conference, organised at Engg. College, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, on 1st
Oct., and also at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, on
20th Oct.
Prof. H. Veeramani, Centre for Environmental Science and
Engineering, and Jagriti Dawra presented a paper entitled
"Pollution Abatement and Effluent Recycle through Oxygen
Delignification and Bleaching Processes" at the IPPTA
Conference on "Green, Clean and Closed Loop Systems -
Concepts and Realities" at Jaipur during October 13-14 2000.

STAFF NEWS
Shri H. S. Waydande, Asst. Librarian (SG)
has been a awarded Ph.D in Library & Information Science by
the Poona University. He topic of research was "Behaviour
Pattern of Users in Academic and Research Libraries, with special
reference to Central Library, IIT Bombay". He completed his
research under the guidance of Dr. S. R. Ganpule, ex-Librarian of
IITB and Mumbai University. He made survey of more than 400 users
belonging to different categories of users e.g., Faculty, Students
(UG & PG), Staff, Corporate Members, Slumni Members, Visitors
from Universities, Engineering Colleges and R & D Scientists
in Industries.

Shri Hindurao Waydande has been working in the Central Library for
the last 20 years. His specialisation is Computerisation of
Libraries and Electronic Security. He has published many articles
in books and periodicals.

STUDENT NEWS
Mr. G. V. Prashanth, 4th year B Tech
student, Dept. of Aerospace Engg, attended the 3rd Asia Pacific
Conference on Aerospace Technology and Science, APCATS-2000, at
Kunming, China, during October 4-8, 2000 and presented his paper
titled "A design tool for passive slosh avoidance/control in
laterally excited containers" co-authored with Prof. N.
Ananthkrishnan.

IITB Contingent at UMANG
The Nursee Monjee College of Commerce and
Economics held its first ever "annual" fest UMANG from
27th August to 2nd September, where the IITB
contingent was led by Ravi Kakkad and Zero. The events held were
divided into three parts: Management events, Lit events and
Performing and Fine Arts events.
The IITB contingent won the first prize in the 'Cats the way'
event, which was a thorough test of Management Aptitude starting
with a written test to GDs and then Personal interviews conducted
by eminent management professionals. The team consisted of Armpit,
Abhishek Mishra, Rishi Rajan, Ashish Goel, Kensy, Zero, Ravi
Kakkad, Saurabh Garg, Ajay Raghavan and Ashwin.
As also team of DeepC, Zero and Ravi stood third in the word-games
contest
Overall the IITB contingent gained a fourth position and prizes
worth Rs. 70,000, in the form of coupons for computer courses at
the Indian institute of Computer Science and Technology, Andheri.

Valves" was organised on the 1st of November in
the Mechanical Engineering Seminar Room, where the speaker was
Prof. V. J. Modi, Professor Emeritus, University of British
Columbia, Vancover, B.C, Canada.
The topic discussed had interdisciplinary interest involving
Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics,
Optical Engineering, Material Science as well as Bio-Medical

Professor Christophe RABUT, INSA (National Institute of Applied
Sciences), Toulouse, France delivered a talk titled "Discretisation
of the Derivative of a Function and Generalised Divided
Differences" on the 25th of October.
Industrial Math Group Seminar Series On Time Series and Neural
Networks Modelling
Speaker: Sanjeev Sabnis
The theme of the seventh talk was "Modelling of Real-Life
Time Series Data. Modelling excercise involves three basic steps:
identification, estimation and validation." and was organized
on the 4th of October.
The continuation of the seventh talk, "Modelling of Real-Life
Time Series Data: Estimation and Validation aspects", was
held on the 25th of October.
The Theme of the eighth talk continued with "Modelling of
Real-Life Time Series Data: Estimation and Validation
aspects", which was organised on the 1st of
November.

Biorad laboratories presented a seminar on Confocal Imaging at

A seminar was organised on the 12th of October where the speaker
was Dr. Nishigandha Nayak of Cancer Research Institute, Mumbai,

A seminar on "Polymorphism at Metabolic gene loci: its role
in increased susceptibility to oral cancers", by Dr. Rajini
Bhisey, Cancern Research Institute, Mumbai, was organised on the
19th of October.
Dr. S. Ranganthan, I.I.C.T, Hyderabad was the speaker at the
seminar titled "Zinc: The emerging champion in molecular
biology" which was held on the 20th of October.
A seminar on "Biotechnological Applications of Alpha -
Galactosidases" was organised on the 25th of
October where the speaker was Prof. V.H.Mulimani, P.G. Dept. of
Biochemistry, Gulbarga University, Karnataka

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CENTRE
A lecture on 'Triology" was organised on the 4th of October
which was delivered by Mr. Bimbalkar who is working for MICO for
the last 25 years and has maintained his interest in physics for
last thirty years.
IDC Art-Design-Society Lecture Series
A lecture by Mr. Sunil Gawde, Contemporary painter, was organised
on the 11th of October. Mr Gawde has had solo exhibitions in
Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, New Delhi, Varanasi, Baroda, and in
London and Glasgow. He has also participated in various
prestigious group shows and camps. He was awarded the Charles
Wallace India Trust Award 1995-96 by the British Council, with
residency at the Glasgow School of Art, U. K.

The Engineers' Day
was celebrated on the 15th of September to commemorate the 139th
Birthday of Bharat Ratna Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. On this
occasion a lecture titled "Pest Control in Engineering
Structures - State of Art and Emerging Scenario" was
organised. The technical staff of the Building, Works & Estate
as well as many faculty members and students attended.

GANDHI JAYANTI CELEBRATIONS
"ANJALI", a programme of
devotional music was organised on the 2nd of October to
commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. The programme was presented by
Students' Gymkhana and the participating singers and accompanists
were students, members of the faculty, staff and the residents of
the IITB Campus.
The lamp was lighted by Prof. S. C. Lakkad, Deputy Director and
Prof. U. Yajnik, Chairman, Cultural. The programme concluded with
Gandhiji's favourite bhajan "Vaishnav Jana".
