The major recommendations of the workshop are : 1. Reduce waste generation, 2) segretation at source, 3) insitu utilisation, 4) improved handling and transportation, 5) waste utilisation technologies, 6) promotion of use of organic fertilizers, 7) separate utilisation of hsopital waste, 8) promotion of resource development sources for small scale bodies, 9) Resource development Centre at IIT Bombay, 10) consultancy Assistance from IIT Bombay - SICOM. The action plan for Maharashtra has redefined the agencies responsible for implementation of the tasks indicated above so as to be able to achieve the desired results before the close of the 20th century. Indo-Japan Workshop The second Indo-Japan workshop on Advanced Manufacturing Systems was held at IIT Bombay on 24-25 Nov. 1997. This workshop was organised on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology and Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences. Prof. S.S.Pande, Mech. Engg. Dept. was the convener of the workshop. A team of seven eminent researchers from Japan participated and presented their research papers. In addition, a number of invites from other IITs, IISc. and some industries participated and presented their papers. A Panel discussion on the theme "Towards Global Manufacturing" was also organised. The panel comprised of Senior Executives viz., Dr. Nirmal Jain (Tata Infotech), Mr. Maheshwari (L&T), Mr. Pate (Siemens) and the Japanese. Prof. D.B.Phatak, Dean (RD) was the moderator.
