AWARDS / DISTINCTIONS
Prof.
Krithi Ramamritham,
Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, has been elected a
fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery(ACM). This is a
singular honour bestowed on members for their outstanding
achievement in Computer Science and Information Technology.
Prof. Madhav Kulkarni, Dept. of Civil Engg. has been
appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of the UK-based
international journal, "Survey Review" with effect from
November 2000.
Dr. P. Selvam, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry
has been appointed as a "Visiting Fellow" at the
University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), University of
Mumbai, for the year 2000-2001.
Prof. D. V. Khakhar, Department of Chemical Engineering,
has been elected a fellow of the Indian National Academy of
Engineering (INEA).
Prof. A. K. Suresh, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, has been
jointly selected for the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers' (IIChE)
Herdillia Award for "Excellence in Basic Research in Chemical
Engineering" for the year 2000, along with Dr. Narendra Nath
Dutta, Scientist, Regional Research Laboratory, Assam. The award
will be presented at the 53rd Annual Session-cum-Indian
Chemical Engineering Congress 2000 (CHEMCON-2000), to be held
during 18th to 21st December 2000.
Prof. R. Raghuhathan and Dr. S. Baser, Department of
Chemical Engineering, have been selected for the Indian National
Academy of Engineering (INEA) Young Engineer Award for the year
2000. The award consists of a Certificate, a gold plated Medallion
and Rs.20,000/- in cash and will be presented on the Annual
Function of the Academy which is scheduled to be on the 8th
of December 2000.
S. M. Murigendrappa, Ph. D. student, Department of
Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded Sir C. V. Raman Award for
the Best Paper published in the Journal of Acoustical Society of
India. The Awards Committee has adjudged three Papers as the Best
Papers for the year 1997.
Ms. Ilika Chakravarty, Ph.D Research Scholar, Department of
Humanities and Social Sciences, won first prize comprising of cash
money Rs. 25,000 and a citation for the Best Essay titled
"Knowledge-Based Industry in Maharashtra", in the essay
competition organised by the Maharashtra Economic Development
Council (MEDC).
The prize was conferred upon her at the D. N. Gadgil Memorial
Lecture organised by the MEDC on the 11th of November.

FACULTY NEWS
Dr. Oleg E. Vershinin, who worked for IIT Bombay in
1960-1962 as a professor of Industrial Electronics - UNESCO
Program, passed away this month at his residence in St.
Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Vershinin was always proud of his
involvement in establishing IIT as a world class university and
the success of his students.
In case if some of his former colleagues and students still keep a
memory of him, they may offer their condolences at the e-mail
address of his wife Nadezhda and his daughter Ludmila, both of
whom lived with him in India: lu[!]love.spb.ru.
Prof. Mohan C. Joshi, Department of Mathematics organised a
whole day session on "Applied Analysis and Industrial
Mathematics", and also presented an invited talk in the 3rd
World Congress of Nonlinear Analysts (WCNA 2000) which was held in
the University of Catania, Italy during 19th-26th July, 2000.
Dr. P. Selvam, Associate Professor, Department of
Chemistry, delivered lectures during 9th and 10th November at the
University of Pune for the UGC Sponsored Refresher Course on
Inorganic Chemistry for college teachers on the following topics:
- Basic Crystallography
- Structure of Elements
and Compounds
Prof. H. Veeramani, Centre for
Environmental Science and Engineering, was invited to Chair the
session of Emerging Technologies and Socio-economic Trends at the
AQUATECH 2000 Conference on Water Resource Management during 11-12th
November at Pune, which was organised by Pune Construction
Engineering Research Foundation in association with Construction
Industry Development Council, New Delhi.
Papers were also presented by Dr.(Mrs.) P. Venkatachalam,
Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering and Prof. Kapil
Gupta, Dept. of Civil Engineering during this session.

VIPASSANA
Mr. S. N. Goenka, who has been a master
Vipassana meditation teacher for the last thirty years, delivered
a lecture on "Vipassana : The Super Science of Mind and
Matter" on the 1st of November. Over 75 Vipassana centers
have been established worldwide under Mr. Goenka's guidance,
thereby enabling 10,000 students to undertake the courses every
year.

SEMINAR ON WELDING EDUCATION
IITB, in association with The India Institute of Welding,
Mumbai, organised a seminar on "Welding Education" on
the 3rd of November, where the chief guest was Prof. S. C. Lakkad,
Deputy Director, IITB and the seminar was presided by Shri D.S.
Hanavar, Chairman, Hanavar Electrodes.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Tata Infotech Ltd. organised a seminar on "Evolution of
Nuclear Explosives" on the 8th of November in the Electrical
Engineering Seminar Hall, as part of its Distinguished Lecture
Series. The speaker for the occassion was Dr. P. K. Iyengar,
Chairman (Retd.), Atomic Energy Commission
Dr P. K. Iyengar has been associated for over four decades with
the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. Dr.Iyengar took over as
Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1984 and was
appointed Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission in 1990.
In his long career Dr. P.K.Iyengar has been the recipient of many
awards and honours, including the S. S.Bhatnagar Award and the
Padma Bhushan.

A seminar titled "Some
Problems in Industrial Mathematics" was organised on the 8th
of November where the speaker Prof. Mohan C. Joshi spoke about
certain issues pertaining to Industrial Mathematics as also
presented a report on the World Congress of Nonlinear Analysts (WCNA
'2000), which was held in the University of Catania (Italy),
during the 19-26th July 2000.
IITB Mathematics Association and Bombay Mathematical Colloquium
presented a popular lecture on "Fundamental Interactions and
Geometry" by Prof. Urjit Yajnik, Department of Physics, on
the 3rd of November.
Prof. Jan Willem Polderman, Fac. Mathematical Sciences, University
of Twente (Netherlands), gave a talk titled "Sequential
Continuous Time Adaptive Control: A Behavioural Approach" on
the 14th of November.

Seminar Series : Conservation Laws
Speaker - Prof. Amiya Kumar Pani
Under this series a talk titled "Numerical Schemes" was
organised on the 4th of November.
A talk on "Numerical Schemes for Linear Problems" was
organised on the 11th of November.
In continuation with the earlier talks, a talk titled
"Numerical Schemes: Stability, Consistency and
Convergence" was organised on the 18th of November.
Industrial Math Group Seminar Series on Time Series And Neural
Networks Modelling

The theme of the tenth talk was "Modelling of Real-Life Time
Series Data: A few more case studies" which was organised on
the 8th of November.

A Colloquium was organised on the "Monte Carlo Methods for
Electromagnetic Parameter Estimation" on the 3rd of November,
where the speaker was Prof. Madhav Desai, Dept. of Electrical
Engineering. In the talk some recent works related to this area
were presented along with some other issues pertaining to this
field.

Dr. (Ms.) Nandini Bhattacharya, Van der Waals - Zeeman Institute,
University of Amsterdam, was the speaker at the seminar titled
"Cold Atoms Bouncing on an evanescent wave mirror",
which was organised on the 24th of November.

The SJM School of Management conducted the following Management
Development Programmes and Workshops:
* MDP for the officers of Stock Holding Corporation of India
during 13th to 18th October.
* MDP on "Strategic Business Thinking-Agenda for Indian
Organisations in 2000-2001", jointly organised with CII
Naoroji Center of Excellence on the 4th of November. The Programme
faculty and speakers were drawn from the School of Management,
reputed consultancy organisations as well as eminent business
leaders from manufacturing and services based industries.
* A programme on "Options and Futures" jointly organised
with CII Naoroji Center of Excellence, during November 10th and
11th.
* A workshop on "Case Method" for EPC Group of Larsen
& Toubro Ltd., on the 11th of November.

Inter IIT Acquatic's 2000
The Inter IIT Acquatic's 2000 was held at IIT Kanpur from 14th to
16th October, 2000.Sachin Pagnis (Caption), IITB won 4 gold, 8
silver and 2 bronze medals thereby leading IITB to bring home the
Swimming Trophy for the 16th year in a row. In water polo IITB
acquired the fourth position. The other winners were:
Ashwin Prasad 2 Golds & 2 Bronzes
Anish Lohokare 1 Gold (Relay)
Naganand Murthy 1 Gold (Relay)
K.V.S Nationals
The K.V.S Nationals were held at Bilaspur (M.P.) during 12th to
17th October 2000, where the following swimmers of the IIT
Swimming Club representing K.V. IITB participated:
Raj Bahadur Thapa (under 14) won Gold in the 100M, 200M
Butterfly and Medley Relay; Silver in 400M freestyle. He has also
been selected to represent K.V.S at the School Games Federation of
India meet to be held at Guahati in the last week of November
2000.
Ankan Sengupta (under 17) won Bronze in the 200M Back &
400M Free and was selected for SGFI Meet.
Arun R. Nair won Gold in medley relay in the under-14
group.
Maharashtra State Inter Schools Meet
Pankaja Date, 8th Standard student of the IIT Campus School
won a Bronze medal in the 800M freestyle in under 19 age group in
the Maharashtra State Inter Schools Meet which was held during
21st to 24th October 2000 in Poona.
