IIT Bombay - Government of Goa Sign MOU

IIT Bombay entered into a Memorandum of understanding with the Government of Goa on July 23, 2001.

The Memorandum was signed by Prof. Ashok Misra, Director and Shri Balewar Rai, Chief Secretary , Govt. of Goa.

According to the MOU possibilities for collaborative activities would be explored in the following areas:

a. Development of facilities for providing e-communiation and internet acess in Konkani and Marathi languages.

b. Setting up mechanisms for the upgradation of quality and level of technical education in he State of Goa.

c. Setting up of distance education and e-learning facility in the State of Goa.

d. Setting up of a technology incubator programme for promotion of entrepreneurship in high technology areas in the State of Goa.

e. Establishment of an exended campus of IITB in the State of Goa.

f. Any other collaboration in mutually agreed areas.

Using the terms of the MOU, the two parties would enter into agreements from time to time to execute parts of the MOU

At a joint press conference conducted later at The Goa Sachivalaya, Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister Goa, said that the government has signed the MOU with the IIT with the objective of improving technical education in the state so as to prepare Goan students at the competitive international level. He said the collaboration would cover upgradation of Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi, training of teachers, and deputation of faculty of the college on selected basis for a semester at IIT

Replying to a question, Mr. Parrikar said the estimated cost on the project would be around Rs. 2 crore. However, he said the government would spend Rs. 10 crore on the GEC.

The IIT director said this was the first time that Mumbai IIT has entered into an agreement with a neighbouring state for the purpose of improving quality of technical education.

Prof. Suryanarayanan, Dean R&D, Prof. M. S. C. Bose, Dean Academic programmes and Prof. G. V. Prabhu Gaonkar ( Met. Engg & Mat. Science) were the others from IIT present at the MOU signing function and press briefing.



          Dr. Kota Harinarayana Addresses Freshies

The freshies this year were privileged to have Dr. Kota Harinarayana, Programme Director Light Combat Aircraft of India, address them during their Orientation Programme held from July 18 - 20, 2001.

Dr. Kota's talk on 19th July was on "Challenges of the LCA Programme and its Technology" and was followed by film titled, "The first flight of LCA"



          Institute Lecture by Prof. Bala Balachandran

Prof. Bala Balachandran, J. L. Kellogg Distinguished Professor, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University delivered a lecture on "Strategic Profitability Management" on July 25, 2001.

Prof. Balachandran presented a new concept of " Electronic Value Added " as a basis of managing strategic relationships with Suppliers, Customers and internal resources.

Emphasizing customer profitability, technology with management are linked and a new concept of " Electronic Value Added ( eVA ) " and not economic Value Added is seen as the solution. This helps create strategic alliances with core suppliers ( SRM ) and core customers ( CRM ) with internal resources ( IRM ).



          Ustad Dagar joins as Guest Faculty

Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, the country's leading Drupad proponent has been appointed as a Distinguished Guest Faculty under the "Programme for Human Values". He has assumed the charge of his duties from 25th May, 2001. He will be attached to the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences.

The appointment is for a period of two years.



          AWARDS

Successively for the fourth year IIT Bombay has won the prize in the ASME Student Design Contest from Region XIII, (which includes all of the world except (USA, Canada and Mexico). This years second prize winners are:

Mr. Shobhit Verma, Mr. Vivek Vaid, Mr. Akhilesh Mrutunjaya from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The prize is US $ 100, a citation and a Medal. They had to design a robot with fishing rod to throw an object on the arbitrarily positioned three targets. The first winner is the National University of Singapore.

IIT Bombay Continuing Education Programme has been selected as Winner for The Golden Peacock National Training Award- 2001 in the Training Provider category by the Institute of Directors. IOD is a registered non-profit apex association of directors committed to improving the competitiveness of Indian business.

The award would be presented during the IOD Foundation Day function, being held in Jacaranda Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi at 19.00 hrs on Friday 3rd August 2001. Shri Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Power.



          Faculty News:

Dr. P. Selvam, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry presented the following two papers titled "Tertiary butylation of phenol over sulfated zirconia" and "Tertiary butylation of phenol over mesoporous GaMCM-41", in the International Symposium on Acid-Base Catlysis (IV) at Matsuyama, Japan during May 7-12, 2001.

Prof. Selvam also visited various Universities , Institutes and Industries in Japan during May 13 - June 17, 2001 and delivered talks

Prof. Prasenjit Biswas, Sr. Lecturer, HSS delivered six lectures on the theme, "Phenomenology of Culture" at the International Summer Course on Phenomenology jointly organized by Centre for Advanced research in Phenomenology(CARP),Florida Atlantic University and Sri Aurobindo School of Eastern and Western Philosophy in July 2001.

At the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore, he delivered a paper entitled,"Engineering 'Experiences':How Genetics Could Cover the Gap Between Neurology and Neuropsychology" in an International Seminar on SCIENCE AND METAPHYSICS :A DISCUSSION ON GENETICS AND CONSCIOUSNESS organized by NIAS and sponsored by John Templeton Foundation, USA and Co-Sponsored by Indian Council of Philosophical Research and Centre for Studies in Civilizations, New Delhi.

Prof. Maheshwar Sharon, Chemistry Department, visited University of Sussex, Brighton, UK from 2nd May 2001 to 27th June 2001 under the Indo-UK project, as a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science. He got the opportunity to work in collaboration with Prof. H. Kroto, FRS, Noble Laureate and his research group on developing carbon nanotubes. He also visited the laboratory of Prof. Michael N. R. Ashfold, Chemistry Department, Bristol University, where he studied the electron field emission from carbon nanotubes prepared from camphor at Sussex University.

Prof. A. K. Rastogi, Department of Civil Engineering participated in the International Conference on Civil Engineering held at IISc Bangalore from July 23 - 25, 2001. He presented a paper involving auto calibration of groundwater flow models and also co chaired a session with Prof Karihaloo of the Cardif University, UK.

Dr. J. C. Mandal, Associate Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. He has been awarded highest fellowship amount in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions.



          SEMINARS / WORKSHOPS

Department of Electrical Engineering

Prof. Arye Nehorai, Chief Editor IEEE Trans. on DSP Signal Processing, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, The University of Illinois at Chicago, spoke on "New Directions in Space-Time Information Processing" on July 25, 2001.

"Designing better control strategies for the Internet" was the topic of the seminar delivered by Dr. Vishal Mishra, Asst. Professor, Computer Science Department, Columbia University on 24th July 2001.

Mr. Prashant Jhawar, Vice Chairman, Usha Martin Group spoke on "Building Techno- Entrepreneurship on July 31, 2001.

Biotechnology Centre

Dr. Harish C. Joshi, Associate Professor of Cell Biology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta gave a talk on " Microtubule assembly, mitotic checkpoints and cancer" on 26th July, 2001.

Dr. G Mugesh, Institue of Physiological Chemistry, Heinrich-Heine University, Diisseldorf, Germany, spoke on "New Functions of Thioredoxin Reductases" on 26th July, 2001



          SCHOLARSHIP INSTITUTED AT CAMPUS SCHOOL

Shri A. V. Abhayankar, Asst. Registrar (Academic) has donated Rs. 25000/- for instituting scholarships at the campus school. The interest will be converted into two merit-cum-means scholarships (prizes) - one for a IX Std. student and one for a XI Std. student to help his/ her performance in S.S.C. and H.S.C exams respectively.



          LIBRARY NEWS

Electronic Security System

The Central Library has installed an Electronic Security System to check taking out of unauthorized material. An Electronic Security gate has been installed at the entrance of the Library and the issue procedure has been modified. The system is being introduced in a phased manner.

In keeping with large libraries around the world, IIT Bombay Central Library is the first IIT to install such an Electronic Security System.

Ph. D. Theses Abstracts Degistized

The online submission of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) of Ph. D. and M. Tech. Students (full text and one page abstract) has been introduced from January 1999. This is the first of its kind in India. An ETD web server has been set up in the Central Library.

The library has also undertaken the work of scanning and digitizing abstracts of Ph. D. Theses of the Institute prior to 1999. The work is complete and is available on the INTRANET and can be retrieved by Author, Title, Keyboards, Degree/ Department etc. This site can be accessed at URL http://etd.iitb.ac.in.

Database of Pamphlets available on OPAC.

Database of 58,500 records of Pamphlets/ Reports/ Standards is complete and is available on library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Bibliographic data can be retrieved by Author, Title/ sub title, Words, Number of particular Pamphlet/ Report/ Standard.



          IIT SWIMMING CLUB AT JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

IIT Swimming coach Dr. P. M. Reddy took the Maharashtra team to the Junior National Aquatic championships-2001 which was held at Goa from 6th to 10th July.

After several years Maharashtra has done extremely well winning 58 medals (20 golds, 19 silvers, 19 bronze) coming overall second behind Karnataka.

IIT swimming club contribution to Maharashtra medals tally are: Last year Sub. Jr. Nationals champion Shruti Reddy, out of 6 events she took part in, won 4 golds and 2 silvers. Another swimmer of our club Miss Vishaka Naik won 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Dr. B. B. Appaji has taken our as Aincharge, Students Gymkhana from 29th June 2001.

Dr. Swaminathan Venkataraman has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Contract) in the Department of Mathematics from 2nd July, 2001.

Dr. (Ms.) Rinti Banerjee has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Contract) in the Bio-medical Engineering Group from 10th July, 2001.

Dr. K. Sureshkumar has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Contract) in the Department of Mathematics from 11th July, 2001.

Dr. Harish K. Pillai has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical 5th July, 2001.

Dr. Y. Y. Lokhandwala has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in The Bio-Medical Engineering Group from 12th July, 2001.

Dr. Swapneshu Ashok Baser has been appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering from 9th July, 2001

Dr. Shireesh B. Kedare has been appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Energy Systems Engineering Group from 2nd July, 2001.

Dr. A. P. Chaukar has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Group from 2nd July, 2001.

Dr. V. M. Tom has been appointed as a Lecturer Sr. Scale( Contract) in the Department of Civil Engineering from 3rd July, 2001.

Dr. Prasanna S. Gandhi has been appointed as a Lecturer Sr. Scale (Contract) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2nd July, 2001.
