The Indian Institute of Technology (IITB) has had
increasing difficulty recruiting graduate students of the
highest calibre to meet the academic and research
goals of a world-class institute.
The quality of graduate students at IITB is the best
that any IIT can attract, but it is not on par with the
quality of undergraduates. Top undergraduates of IITB
and the other IITs leave India to do their graduate
work. Graduate students who enter IITB come mostly
from Indias second-tier engineering and technology
schools
Several conditions govern graduate student
recruitment. Students must have suitable research
facilities and equipment, financial assistance and
support to travel to technical forums. Much of the
equipment used in instruction and research at IITB is
old and labs often do not contain equipment in general
use today in industry and for research at the edge of
technology. Inadequate laboratory facilities hamper
laboratory-based instruction and practical application of
academic training in many areas.
Little money is available for graduate student
scholarships at any level of entry to IITB. In particular,
advanced research and education is thwarted by a lack
of Ph.D. and post doctoral fellowships.
World-class institutes of technology have strong
undergraduate and graduate support programs.
Research resources attract top students. In world-class
institutes, virtually all graduate students are supported
at some level. In turn, the research conducted by these
students and the success of these same students after
graduation create the image of a world-class
institute, giving world-wide recognition to the best
technology schools in the world.
