World-Class Mathematics Is The Language of a World-Class
 Science and Technology Institute

The Department of Mathematics is well known for teaching and research covering a wide range of fields, including, algebra, combinatorics, geometry, functional and harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, scientific computing, solid & fluid mechanics, bio-mechanics, tribology and rheology, statistical inference, applied probability, statistical quality control and biostatistics. In addition, because of the universal nature of mathematics application throughout IITB, there is a constant stream of collaborative research with other science and engineering departments. An emphasis on "Industrial Mathematics" has created an important industry-academic linkage.

Faculty have pegged research as a key to excellence in education and prominence for IITB as a world-class institute. Meeting world-class standards will require additional resources, including new laboratory facilities, a vastly improved reference and teaching library, and fellowships to attract graduate students.

To augment faculty, visiting professor, distinguished professor, adjunct faculty, and faculty exchange programs are proposed. Finally, a journal is proposed to be published through the Department which would demonstrate the excellence of IITB's efforts in Mathematics research and education.

Department Giving Opportunities to Help IIT Bombay Become World-Class

Faculty Development and augmenting faculty resources for student education and research are the aims of a series of proposals for new funding of visiting, adjunct and exchange faculty programs in mathematics.

Visiting Professor Chair (3):
$21,000/ yr

Visiting Fellow (6): $7,200

Faculty Exchange (5): $10,000

Distinguished Faculty (4):
$8,000

Graduate Students will gain an unparalleled education in mathematics at IITB, and the students will provide a much needed boost to research, but fellowships are needed to attract top-quality students

Ph. D. (10): $3,000 each/ yr

Post Doctoral (10):
$4,000 each/ yr

Mathematics Library Upgrade, to include resubscription to journals canceled over the past
decade and acquisition of new journals

Annual cost: $30,000

Multimedia Laboratory to enable distance communication and learning. This will extend the teaching resources of the department throughout India, to address needs for rural learning and emerging industries in India

Annual cost: $14,000

Research Laboratory Resources are needed to address modern computational applications, such as in the area of computational fluid dynamics. This lab would include powerful computational
equipment.

Year 1: $62,000

Annual cost: $16,000

Research Journal published by the Mathematics Department, with submissions of work invited from the best scholars.
