The Department of Mathematics is well
known for teaching and research covering a
wide range of fields, including, algebra,
combinatorics, geometry, functional and
harmonic analysis, partial differential
equations, scientific computing, solid & fluid
mechanics, bio-mechanics, tribology and
rheology, statistical inference, applied
probability, statistical quality control and
biostatistics. In addition, because of the
universal nature of mathematics application
throughout IITB, there is a constant stream
of collaborative research with other science
and engineering departments. An emphasis
on "Industrial Mathematics" has created an
important industry-academic linkage.
Faculty have pegged research as a key to
excellence in education and prominence for
IITB as a world-class institute. Meeting
world-class standards will require additional
resources, including new laboratory facilities,
a vastly improved reference and teaching
library, and fellowships to attract graduate
students.
To augment faculty, visiting professor,
distinguished professor, adjunct faculty, and
faculty exchange programs are proposed.
Finally, a journal is proposed to be published
through the Department which would
demonstrate the excellence of IITB's efforts
in Mathematics research and education.
