World-Class Humanities And Social Sciences Broaden
 The Academic Experience at IIT

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences plays a unique and distinctive role at IIT. Engineering and science are, by their very nature, humanistic and socially derived pursuits. Therefore, a complete science and technology education, as well as creation of a true scholar, must include liberal arts, economics and social studies.

The commitment to imparting a complete education to students distinguishes IIT Bombay from most other technology schools in India, where studies are limited to the trades. At IIT Bombay, education unites application with principle, the technical with the perceptive, and scientific knowledge with human and social understanding.

It is the role of the faculty in the Humanities department to foster awareness and knowledge of the nature of human inquiry, the social, economic and human condition, culture and values and the humane, and thoughtful application of science and technology to attain sustainable development. The Department plays a distinctly critical role in helping IIT Bombay to become a true world leader in research and complete education by nurturing an atmosphere of creativity, innovation and scholarship in its unending quest for excellence.

The ultimate vision is to create an ambience in which attention to humanistic elements and social consequences of all that we do is shared, new ideas, research and scholarship flourish and from where innovators and a new brand of leaders with a sensitivity to human values, social and cultural awareness emerge.

To realize this vision of a world-class institute, a new emphasis on cultural diversity, new studies and more reference materials are urgently needed.
