World-Class Electrical Engineering Technology at IITB Fosters
 Excellence in Education and Research

Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay boasts the largest student strength of any department, with over 300 undergraduate and almost as many graduate students. As a result of the success of alumni and faculty, the department already enjoys world-wide recognition. Academic training and research focus on four main areas, communication and signal processing, controls and instrumentation, micro-electronics, and power electronics and systems.

Despite the recognition that comes with the success of alumni, during the past decade rapid progress in technology far outstripped the Departments ability to acquire the newest instrumentation and equipment for teaching and research. This has resulted in a loss of educational and research capacity, harming students and faculty. In addition, little or no money has been available for graduate student recruitment and bringing in visiting scholars from other universities world-wide. In the rapidly developing field of EE, such interaction is essential to keep up with technology.

On the positive side, the department has established partnerships with several corporate giants in technology, such as TATA and Sun Microsystems, both of which have sponsored new laboratories for the EE Department. In addition, private sponsorship has established the Wadhwani Electronics Lab, which has provided an immense boost to the Department's education and research capacity.

Continued progress of the kind already underway with industry and private donors will enable the EE Department to reach and maintain ranking with the top technology institutes in the world.
