The Department of Computer Science and
Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay (IITB) is an active, research oriented
department with strong ties to the computer
industry. Sponsorships through government and
industry have supported research and have added
needed infrastructure in recent years. In addition,
generous private funders have endowed faculty
chairs and fellowships.
In particular, sponsored work has allowed the
creation of a Centre for Formal Design and
Verification and founding of the Centre for
Research on Intelligent Internets. Laboratories
and projects have also been funded thorough
sponsorships with computer industry giants, such
as Intel, Tata, IBM, Bell Labs, Apple, Sun
Microsystems and others.
Despite this sponsored work, little funding has
been available for the basic needs of students,
maintenance and basic laboratory upgrades. In
particular the lack of top graduate students to
assist faculty with research is thwarting progress.
IIT Bombay stands out because of a superior
undergraduate program, better than U. S.
standards, but when it comes to graduate
students the best go elsewhere.
Fellowships to attract graduate students is the key
to student recruitment, especially at the Ph. D.
level where the need is most critical, and where
progress in this area of need will make the
greatest impact on improving research and
meeting world-class standards.
