Competency in Use of Computers Is Totally Basic To
The Future Of Engineering And Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology (IITB) is at the cutting edge of power computing and the undisputed leader in computing services in India. The institute has an optical fiber backbone- based state-of-the-art network covering the entire campus. Every laboratory, classroom and hostel room is connected and the Center operates 24x7. This ranks IITB among the world's leading universities in providing students with unlimited access to the entire computing resources of the institute and the Internet.

The vision doesn’t stop here. To build upon this work and reach world-class status, the faculty of IITB seek increased bandwidth, modern facilities, increased educational opportunities for students and the computing platform to service all of India through distance educational services.

In the rapidly changing environment of computing, the Computer Centre needs to continually upgrade technology and equipment to provide state of the art facilities and services.

A world-class education in science and technology demands the newest computers and computational facilities, plus access to the full array of software in use world-wide.

The IITB now has almost 5,000 students, with 1,000 more to come in the next few years. There are about 400 faculty, with the number to rise to almost 600 within five years. The demand on services is expected to increase by a factor of four by the year 2008. Currently the Computer Centre supports the students and faculty in an outdated building providing only 6,000 sq.ft. of work area. Space has become a serious constraint to service. As IITB embarks on its drive to provide distance learning to all of India, demand on the computer center will increase many fold.

These are the growing pains of IITB, tracking the progress made by other great universities, in moving to the realm of world-class computing services.

Campus-Wide Giving Opportunities to Help IIT Bombay Become World-Class

New Computer Center Building. Envisioned as having have a carpet area of 20,000 sq.ft., and up to a total 30,000 sq.ft. usable space, the new centre will be designed specifically as a powerful resource for education and research

Shell Construction: $1.6 million

Equipment Upgrade: $750,000

Operating Endowment: $1.0 million

Student Computer Fund. Sixty percent of students do not have a personal computer, yet each hostel room is equipped with network connections. This self-perpetuating fund would provide students with a computer, for which students would then pay a prorated amount each year, taking possession at the end of their stay at IITB.

Start-up cost: $150,000

Student Producers Club. Centered around a full-fledged digital production facility, students will produce two to three hours of television and video programming each day. By capturing lectures, seminars and social events for viewing by students, alumni and general broadcast in India, this club would be a training ground for students interested in digital broadcast technology.

Production Facility: $100,000

Annual Support: $50,000

Endowment: $625,000

Video on Demand. Initially to be used to deliver lectures and course material campus-wide, this facility would evolve to serve IITB's bid to provide distance learning throughout rural India using modern electronic transmission technology.

Start-up cost: $50,000

Annual Maintenance: $25,000

System Administrator Fund. Low salary levels make recruitment of system administrators difficult. This fund would provide money for professional development and added benefits.

Annual: $10,000

Endowed New Faculty Chairs. Low salary levels make recruitment of new faculty difficult. This fund would provide support for research, travel and other benefits that typical government funded faculty positions can not provide.

Endowment: $125,000
