FCKEditor Help
- Reunion websites should be created within the "Reunions" folder under "Chapters + Events".
- IITBAA events (e.g. Goa Reunion, Nashik Chapter launch etc.) should be created within the IITBAA folder.
- Chapter websites should also keep all their webpages within their respective folders. Each Chapter website has a "default" HOME page which should NOT be changed.
- Chapter websites typically include the following pages:
- Home page (overview of Chapter's location, mission, current events etc.) will be created by webteam. The Chapter can of course edit the content of this page, but the "default" page for the Chapter folder should NOT be changed.
- Other typical pages include Contact Us, Mission Statement, Office Bearers, Past Events, Upcoming Events etc. and the Chapter can name/add/edit them as they wish.
- Decide which folder to place the new webpage in. The major menu items shown in the left navigation menu of the website are "folders", e.g. Online Community, Chapters + Events, Alumni Services, Giving Back, Initiatives or ContactUs etc.You can add a webpage to any of these "folders".
- Important note: The "Chapters" and "Reunions" sub-folders which are within the "Chapters + Events" folder, as well as the "News" and "FAQs" folders are exceptions to #1 above and webteam [at] iitbombay.org should be contacted for help. For example, for Reunion websites or new Chapter sites, an entire new folder may have to be created rather than just one new webpage.
- After picking the folder where to add the new webpage, click on that link on the left menu to navigate to that folder (e.g. http://www.iitbombay.org/chapters-and-events); now click on the "contents" TAB; in the right-hand-side where you will see Green colored menu tabs, use the "add new ..." dropdown menu to ADD a "page".
- Plone creates a new webpage, and now you need to give it a title which also becomes the URL or page address, so pick a short and pithy title avoiding hyphens, commas etc.; provide a Description; and start editing the Body Text.
- You can COPY and PASTE from Word documents into the Body Text, but adjusting the fonts may take some work. Use the ERASER icon to remove all formatting if you want to start with a clean format after doing a PASTE. See below for more hints on how to create well-formatted pages.
- After you are done editing, click on SAVE at the bottom.
- Edit the page by clicking on the EDIT tab if necessary to get it right, with the desired alignment, fonts, content etc.
- When you are ready to "publish" the page, go to the top right of the new page where it should show STATE as "PRIVATE" and use the dropdown to PUBLISH the page.
Editing Text
- Most formatting buttons work as you would expect in any word processor, such as Bold, Italic etc.
- The STYLE dropdown should be the main method for setting fonts for text added to the page. Normal, headline (i.e. larger font), and footnote (i.e. smaller font) should be the fonts you use most of the time, except if you have to use red text and highlight.
- The FORMAT dropwdown box is best set at Normal (Div) to get tightly spaced lines, and thus Style = Normal and Format = Normal (Div) should be the most commonly used format for any text in your pages.
- Copying and pasting from other websites and documents is easily done in two ways:
- Paste as Plain Text: This should be your default and preferred method since it keeps code clean.
- Paste from Word: Use it to copy content from other webpages with links etc. but this could cause problems since images etc. may be copied over from external sites which may or may not work on a consistent basis. Use Paste from Word only if you must and do it with care.
- The REMOVE FORMAT button which looks like an eraser is a good one to use to clean up copied text which may have unwanted tags etc. causing formatting problems. It gives you a fresh start.
- The Bulleted List and Numbered List icons work as they do in any word processor.
- Left Justify, Center Justify and Right Justify work as expected - one odd quirk to note is that after you SAVE a webpage, some text which you had Left Justified may suddenly become Center Justified. A solution that seems to work is to highlight all the text, select Block Justify (which is after the Right Justify button) first, and then click on Left Justify. In any case, what you see after you SAVE is what you get, so you can go back and forth to fix this till you are satisfied.
Adding/Changing hyperlinked addresses within webpage
- Go to webpage you wish to edit and click on EDIT tab
- Click on the text to link
- Click on the Insert/Edit Link icon in the menu
- Click on "Browse Server" button and move up or down the folder chain to get to the page you want to link - giving you a link like "./resolveUid/da55cc113acf6048db8b1d8734f98058" which is a pointer to the page.
Tables and Images
Adding Tables is easy with the Insert/Edit Table button, and be sure to use all the Border size etc. parameters as you want them.- Insert/Edit Image is the button to use to add images, which should ideally be stored in a folder called Images, which should reside in your working folder.
- Insert Horizontal Line works as you expect, adding a line, as do the Insert/Edit Link and Insert/Edit Anchor buttons.
- The Templates dropdown gives you some nice and easy to use standard design elements such as the "Image and Text on the left" or "Listing table" templates.
- Note that after using the "Image and Text on the left" template, you can go to Source and change class="image-left" to class="image-right" to force the image to the right.
- Finally, if you are an HTML guru, you can click on the SOURCE button and mess around with the HTML tags ... but be careful, very careful!
Menus
- If you are working with a folder (e.g. bangalore) and want to make a page in that folder as the "default" page to open when that folder is clickec (i.e. http://www.iitbombay.org/chapters-and-events/bangalore), then click on the "DISPLAY" (Green menu bar) and then SET ITEM AS DEFAULT VIEW.
Videos from YouTube and CNBC etc.
- Embedding videos from YouTube oer CNBC is easily done as follows --- copy the EMBED HTML code provided by YouTube or CNBC; click on the SOURCE button on the top left of the FCKeditor menu after getting to the spot where you want the video; paste the HTML code; click on SOURCE again to get back to the regular FCKeditor display; save the changes.
Changing page shown by default for folder
The default page shown for a folder can be changed using "VIEW => change content item as default view" tab ... only advanced Plone users should do this, and kindly contact webteam [at] iitbombay.org for help with this feature if you are not an advanced Plone editor.

Excluding a page from navigation tree shown on LHS
To avoid cluttering up the menu items shown on the left hand side, you can exclude folders or webpages from being shown in the navigation pane. As shown below, if the "Exclude from navigation" box is clicked for the page "MISSION", then this webpage will not appear in the navigation tree shown on the left hand side.

Write to webteam@iitbombay.org for any help you need, and a reminder that the User Manual is located at: http://docs.fckeditor.net/FCKeditor_2.x/Users_Guide.
That's all, folks ... have fun with FCKEditor!
