October 23, 2004

IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA) Pune Chapter has planned it’s Annual Meet on October 23rd, 2004 from 5.00 pm onwards at Chandrashekhar Auditorium, IUCAA, Pune University campus.

Background

In the year 2008, IIT Bombay would be completing it’s half century. A landmark occasion like a golden jubilee is the most appropriate time to review what has been accomplished in these five decades? Realizing that high quality manpower with high quality training in the field of science & technology is necessary and would help the progress & development of the nation, The Government of India had decide to set up IIT’s- The Indian Institutes Of Technology. These premier Institutions were designed to provide highest quality, world class Scientific, Engineering & Technological education & training and also be centers for creating an ambience in which Scientific Research & Innovation, Engineering development & Technology adaptation could flourish for the all round growth & development of the nation.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Bombay, one of the first five IITs, was established in the year 1958. Since then hundreds of thousands of bright & young students have graduated from IIT Bombay and have made a mark for themselves not only in India but throughout the world. Hundreds of them are presently residents of Pune & Pimpri-chinchwad twin cities.
In the run up to this landmark golden jubilee celebration, IITB Alumni Association (IITBAA), Pune Chapter has planned a series of activities for the members & to initiate a discussion on the role & expectations of the IIT alumni, what society is and should be expecting from Alumni of the Premier Institute, how can this community of the Technocrats, Engineers, Scientists & Scholars make a contribution not only in the field of Science & technology but also in the area of social & other all walks of life.

Theme for the Annual Meet

With this in mind, the main event of the IITBAA Pune Chapter Annual meet is an ‘Interactive Panel Discussion’ and the theme is ‘How and what can an IIT Alumnus and Alumni Association do to help further the basic aims & objective Of IITs and meet expectations of Society.’ Dr. Nitin Karir, Commissioner PMC & Mrs. Vanadana Chavan , Ex-Mayor Pune & an active social worker, are the special invitees on the panel as representatives of Pune. Prof. A. Misra, Director IIT Mumbai, and some selected members from IITB Pune Alumni would be the other panelists.

The views, opinions and the suggestions of the Panel members could form a major input and the basis for IITBAA Pune Chapter activities. Though this Meet is restricted only to the IIT Bombay Alumni & Faculty members, there are plans to extend such debates & discussions to other forums.
